DENVER - Buddy Check9 has been a part of 9News for more than 16 years.
The idea behind the Buddy Check9 program is quite simple. On the 9th of every month, we ask women to do a monthly breast self-exam and then call their "buddy" to remind her to do the same. Their buddy can be a family member, colleague or friend. Hundreds of women have found lumps; the majority of them are not malignant. Our hope is that cancer is discovered in its early stages, when it is most treatable.
On the 9th of every month, we also promote the location of the Saint Joseph Hospital Mobile Mammography Van. This mobile unit offers mammography screening exams in neighborhoods - in and out in 20 minutes - guaranteed!

Mammograms are strongly recommended on an annual basis for all women ages 40 and older and for younger women with a family history of a first-degree relative (mother or sister) diagnosed prior to age 50. In this case, we advise starting mammograms at an age 10 years prior to the age of the relative's diagnosis.
