Quynh Nguyen joined 9NEWS in January 2000.
Quynh's journey to Colorado actually began in Vietnam, where she was born. Her dad served in the South Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War. He fought alongside American soldiers trying to defeat the communist. Unfortunately, when the war ended in 1975, the South Vietnamese lost and the country fell into the hands of the communist. In 1979, she and her family escaped from Vietnam on a small fishing boat. Her parents wanted a better life for their children in the United States. The family eventually made it to a refugee camp in Hong Kong. In 1980, Quynh and her family came to the United States where a world of possibilities and opportunities awaited. Quynh was 6 years old.
Her family ended up in Thornton, Colorado. Quynh grew up speaking both English and Vietnamese. She graduated from Horizon High School and then attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where she graduated with honors with a degree in broadcast journalism.
Right after college, Quynh began her broadcasting career as a production assistant at KCNC-TV in Denver. After a few months, Quynh got her first on-air job as a reporter for KTTC, the NBC affiliate in Rochester, Minnesota. After 2 years in the Frozen Tundra and Land of 10,000 Lakes, Quynh moved east. She accepted a reporting job at WVEC, the ABC station in Norfolk, Virginia.
Quynh has won 3 Heartland Region Emmy Awards for her work. She received the awards in 2006, 2005, and 2001.
Quynh is the oldest of 5 children, she has 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Her parents and siblings all live in the Denver area. They are very grateful to be here. It's been a long road for Quynh and her family, coming from a third world country to Colorado. She says she is very proud of her parents-- their sacrifices were great. They taught her that with hard work, determination, and a little bit of luck- anything is possible!
When Quynh is not working, she likes to ski, travel, and spend time with her family and her husband, Matt and her kids, Madison and Joshua.
