DENVER - Saturday's 9Cares Colorado Shares Summer Drive was a success. Thousands of Coloradoans across the Front Range donated 71,770 pounds (35.9 tons) of food for families in need.

All of the food collected during Saturday's drive will go to approximately 130 food banks across the state, helping them restock their shelves.

Total food (in pounds) collected from 9Cares Locations:

  • Denver - 27,900
  • Brighton - 2,510
  • Castle Rock - 3,859
  • Elizabeth - 1,385
  • Firestone - 2,352
  • Fort Collins - 2,900
  • Greeley - 2,878
  • Longmont - 3,088
  • Loveland - 2,400
  • Parker - 20,000
  • Windsor - 2,498

TOTAL: 71,770 pounds (35.9 tons)

9Cares also collected $17,531 that will go to purchasing food for banks in need.

Many of the organizations in the 9Cares Food Bank Network have reported higher than average requests for help this year. Summer is traditionally a tougher time for needy families because children that usually depend on the federal free and reduced cost lunch programs are on summer break. Food banks, however, believe there is even more demand for assistance this year because of higher fuel and food prices.

Saturday, many 9NEWS viewers filled their cars and trucks with food and dropped by the 16 locations in 11 cities from Fort Collins to Castle Rock.
