DENVER - At a ceremony Saturday at the 88th Annual Disabled American Veterans (DAV) National Convention at the Sheraton Hotel, Chris Vanderveen received the 2009 Bugle Award for his outstanding local reporting about issues facing disabled veterans.

The DAV specifically cited Vanderveen's story about paralyzed Army Staff Sergeant Matt Keil, his report on Aymber McElroy, widow of Air Force Staff Sergeant Brian McElroy, and her work with casualty notification officers, and his story about the healing power of service dogs to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as reasons for the prestigious honor. These stories, in addition to his impressive body of work of more than 10 years, prompted the honor from the DAV.

DAV National Commander, Raymond E. Dempsey, said, "whether reporting with heartbreaking honesty on a paralyzed US Army Staff Sergeant or letting war widows open our eyes to their painful journey, Chris avoids slogans or false tales of heroism." Dempsey added, "It is his coverage of military service members and families who pay the cost of war that has earned him our recognition."

In accepting the award, Vanderveen said, "The men and women who fought and died and sacrificed in World War Two deserve all of the accolades we can give them. But I believe in my heart that every generation has its chance to do something great, and I truly believe that we are witnesses to that today."

The Bugle award was created by the 1.2 million member organization in 2005 to honor outstanding contributions of the media in support of disabled American veterans and the programs of the DAV. Past recipients of the Bugle Award include MSNBC host, David Shuster, and CBS anchor Bob Schieffer, host of "Face the Nation." Vanderveen is only the second local news reporter to receive the honor.

9NEWS Vice President and News Director, Patti Dennis said, "Chris has an amazing ability to tell real people stories so very well. It's possible Chris' greatest gift is his humility when he is telling a touching story of humanity."

Since joining 9NEWS in 2002, Chris Vanderveen has been recognized with 22 Heartland Emmy awards, 8 regional Edward R Murrow awards and numerous other honors.
