Denver, CO—When most students return to school this fall they’ll be armed with all the tools they need to succeed in class. There are thousands of students, however, that won’t be prepared, because their families simply can’t afford the long list of supplies needed. That’s why 9NEWS has teamed up with the Volunteers of America to collect school supplies for less fortunate Coloradoans. This is the sixth year of the Stuff For Students drive, which wraps up this weekend.
On Saturday, July 29th we will be collecting supplies from 7 a.m.-Noon at the Pepsi Center. The Four O’clock @ 9NEWS team will be at the arena to greet viewers along with personalities from Jazz89 KUVO, Telemundo, and Willie 92.5. We’ll be giving away free Rapids soccer tickets and Buy One Get One Free coupons for Six Flags Elitch Gardens.
People can also stop by Front Range Wal*Mart stores and Rio Grande Mexican Restaurants. There are bins, where you can drop off supplies. The following is a list of basic school supplies that are needed:
· backpacks
· ruled filler paper/wide ruled and college ruled
· pocket folders
· black and blue pens
· #2 pencils
· pack of colored pencils
· pencil boxes
· crayons (24 count)
· colored markers
· highlighters
· white glue
· glue sticks
· scissors (all ages)
· erasers
· rulers
· hand pencil sharpeners
The Stuff For Students drive will benefit 17 school districts along the Front Range. Volunteers with VOA will help to sort the donations and then distribute them to the selected districts next week. The districts will distribute the supplies.
The Stuff For Students drive does not provide supplies directly to individuals. We encourage families in need to contact their school administrators. They may be able to assist you with school supplies and other needs.
According to the Colorado Department of Education there are more than 150,000 students on the federal free and reduced cost lunch programs, in the districts we’re serving alone. There’s no doubt the need is great, we hope you’ll support this worthwhile cause. More information is available at www.9news.com/cr
