Denver, CO— Every year, the Colorado Association of Black Journalists award six “Scribes In Excellence Awards” for the best television stories on the African American community. Once again, 9NEWS has won more CABJ awards than any other station in Colorado.
During a ceremony at the Seawell Ballroom on Friday night, 9NEWS photojournalists and reporters received four “Scribes In Excellence Awards.” In fact, 9NEWS Photojournalist Byron Reed was honored in three of the four categories. The following are the awards 9NEWS received and a description of each:

In April, Colorado legislators named a portion of I-70 after the United States’ first African-American military pilots. On that occasion, Adam Schrager and Byron Reed took a look back at the Tuskegee Airmen and their legacy.

Byron Reed profiled a group of quilters who not only create amazing works with African American themes, but also work to preserve the old art by passing it on. In fact their motto is “Each one, Teach one.”

Little boys and girls dream of becoming all sorts of things—superhero, princess, pilot or fireman. Kim Christiansen and Dave Delozier went out to the National Western Stock Show to meet one who found his dream as a cowboy and is still living it today.

In Africa 85,000 people die of AIDS every day. Earlier this year, an African choir called Watoto came to Colorado to raise money and awareness about the needs of orphans created by the epidemic.
