Many of the organizations in the 9Cares Food Bank Network have reported higher than average requests for help this year. Summer is traditionally a tougher time for needy families because children that usually depend on the federal free and reduced cost lunch programs are on summer break. Food banks, however, believe there is even more demand for assistance this year because of higher fuel and food prices.
Saturday many 9NEWS viewers filled their cars and trucks with food and dropped by the 17 locations from Greeley to Castle Rock. "We like to come as a group. It helps out the community," one member of the Corvette Club said Saturday.
"It's the right thing to go out and do. You should always give back to those who are in need," said William Dice with the Airline Ambassadors.
During the Summer Drive cash and checks were also collected for the 9Cares Tornado Relief Fund. On Saturday we collected more than $8,800, bringing the fund's total to $103,381. All of that money will be donated to the Community Foundation Serving Greeley and Weld County (www.cfsgwc.com) to help survivors of last month's deadly tornadoes in Northern Colorado as they rebuild their communities.
Thank you to the many viewers who made donations to 9Cares Colorado Shares and to our generous sponsors: 7Eleven, Coca Cola, Deline Box Company, King Soopers, SUBWAY, Super Bowl Portable Restrooms, Waste Connections of Colorado, and Welch Equipment. We also extend our thanks to our partners, COMPA Food Bank Ministry, Goodwill of Denver and our many food banks.
