DENVER - It's a bittersweet time for us at 9NEWS. Our friend and co-worker Dave Delozier is leaving after 34 years here. He's moving to Wisconsin to be close to family. We will miss him a lot, and so will many people in Colorado.

I've been working with my friend Dave for more than his time at 9NEWS. We worked together in Wichita, Kan. nearly 40 years ago. Over the entire time, Dave hasn't changed a bit. He's still a great guy, still one of the most compassionate people I've ever met, and still one of the best storytellers in the business. Dave has a knack for relating to people. He knows how to get them to open up. He says it's all about not "interviewing" them, but rather just talking to them. He says "when they start talking from their heart, that's when amazing TV stories happen."

I've been with Dave on dozens, if not hundreds of stories over the years. But my favorite is also his favorite. In 1993, we went to Italy and Poland to do a documentary on Pope John Paul II. Dave became friends with the Papal photographer, who invited him on stage during Easter Mass at St. Peter's Square. With the Pope standing right in front of him, Dave got some of the most emotional and beautiful shots you can imagine. It was very special. The whole trip was. We're aren't Catholic, but it didn't take long for us to figure out Pope John Paul was a rock star.

Dave says his favorite stories are about veterans, farmers, high school athletes and others who are just "normal people." He says their stories are raw, and emotional and important in their own way. Dave has been honored as the best photographer in the country, and as the best reporter-photographer in the country. It's well deserved, but Dave will tell you it's a really a tribute to many photojournalists that he learned so much from. And me, I have learned so much from Dave. He's made me a better TV reporter, and a better person.

We will miss you my friend, but so glad that you'll be telling more stories, only this time in Wisconsin.
