Feb. 8 is when, last year, the Colorado legislature recognized the importance of Colorado's media creation industry, and ultimately went on to approve an increase to incentives offered to promote production in the state.

CINEMA, a statewide advocacy group promoting Colorado's media industry is organizing the anniversary celebration.

"We encourage everyone who is interested in media creation to join us as we celebrate our industry and discuss what's in store for 2013," Michael Haskins, President of CINEMA said. "This is an exciting year for film in Colorado. Already, the state has approved incentives for about $9 million in production."

Academy Award winner Daniel Junge will address the crowd. Haskins described the event as an opportunity to meet Coloradans involved in the film industry as well as active members of the preservation community.

As part of the event, CINEMA is partnering with History Colorado and the Denver Film Society to present a CINEMA Student Film Competition. This competition is open to any student, grade school through grad-school, participating in a film program. The professional style film competition will highlight preservation, and promote film production in Colorado by capturing the beauty of Colorado and showcasing the benefits of filming here.

Haskins says a group of up to ten projects will be green lighted and those will be eligible for reimbursement of production related expenses up to $400. Students will be partnered with an industry professional who will serve as a mentor and will also be provided a Preservation Specialist at History Colorado who will serve as a resource for access to sites, and for direction in research.

Top films will be loaded to a website for People's Choice voting and will be screened by a jury on May 16 at the Denver Film Society's SIE FilmCenter. Jury members will include top producers, and the Colorado State Film Commissioner. Winning films will be announced at an event May 17 at the History Colorado Center.
