KUSA - We all need some bright colorful plant this time of year, so they might as well be orange and blue. The two colors are nearly opposite each other on the color wheel, making them splendid contrasts. And orange, they say, is the hot new color in fashion as well as football.

Many winter blooming plants brighten the season with orange flowers. These include hibiscus, kalanchoe, mums, orchids, begonias and bromeliads. Blue-flowering companions include hydrangea, Persian violet, sweet-scented cineraria daisies and African violets.

These potted flowers will prosper in a sunny window or under grow lights. Keep them moist but not soggy and keep fertilizing with a bloom booster fertilizer. Group them together to help raise humidity levels. Saucers of pebbles beneath the pots catch excess moisture. As it evaporates the plants benefit from that extra humidity.
