KUSA - A dozen roses says, "I thought about this for ten seconds." An orchid says, "I gave this serious thought."

Orchids are beautiful, exotic and remarkably easy to grow. Their sprays of flowers often last for months. Since orchids are not a Valentine's Day cliche, they're appropriate as gifts for both men and women. An orchid plant looks elegant and stylish in any home or office.

The choices of orchids is nearly limitless. The flowers come in every color and many are fragrant. Many bloom in winter.

Orchid care is much easier than most people think. Most do not actually grow in soil but instead attach themselves to tree branches with aerial roots. This makes them very drought tolerant; their thick leaves attest to this. Weekly waterings and monthly fertilization is adequate. Fertilization is the key to getting them to bloom each year. Leave the flowering stems alone since they bloom on them again.

Although orchids tolerate low Colorado humidity, they benefit from the use of a humidifier. They do not need full sun and are often grown under lights by enthusiasts.

With minimal care, the gift of an orchid makes a lasting statement of love.
