DENVER - If you want to play in the dirt a little and bring your children along, you can come out to one of Denver's four parks this Saturday to participate in the annual Put The Beds to Bed event.
"Our annual beds need to be pulled out so we don't have all the decaying plaque material in the parks," said Curtis Draper, a horticulturist with Denver Parks and Rec.
Denver’s 580 annual flower beds, or 300,000 flowers, will have to be removed.
Nearly 200 volunteers are needed at City Park, Alamo Placita, Washington Park and Cranmer Park on Oct. 11. The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers will have the task of removing the annual flowers, dragging tarps, loading flowers in trucks, over-turning and digging dirt.
"We don't have a lot of time in the spring, we try to get our beds as close to ready as we can in the fall," Draper said, "that way we can get the flowers in as early as possible and get them growing, so we can have a nice display in June and July."
All tools, as well as coffee and bagels will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves and water.
This is the 18th annual event for Civic Park, Alamo Placita and Washington Park. City and Cranmer Parks were added two years ago.
If you'd like to participate, call 720-913-0330 or e-mail dpvolunteers@ci.denver.co.us.
