KUSA - When you think about the Civil Rights movement or the Montgomery Bus Boycott, what are the names that come to mind?

For many of us, the first two names that surface are Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. Try naming a few more, and the challenge gets much more difficult.

If Awele Makeba can teach you two or three more of the names of founders to the Civil Rights movement, she'll call her traveling performance a success.

Makeba is the sole performer and teacher for "Rosa Parks: I'm Not Getting On Until Jim Crow Gets Off." The part lecture, part theatre performance takes place Feb. 19 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the New Hope Baptist Church, 3701 Colorado Boulevard, Denver. Admission is $20.

During her stay in Colorado, Makeba took the civil rights discussion to classrooms throughout the metro area, including a stop at Lakewood High School. During the discussion, Makeba introduced Claudette Colvin, a woman who played a pivotal role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Yet when Makeba introduced Colvin, none of the students in the classroom had heard of her name or her role.

Colvin refused to give her seat up in the same manner as Rosa Parks did. The difference? Colvin's refusal happened nearly nine months prior to Parks', and she was nearly half of Parks age at just 15 years old.

If there was a grandmother to the Civil Rights movement, you could argue that Colvin would be on the short list.

Makeba also discusses the role of Emmett Till, his death, and the following publicity within Look magazine. Makeba argues that Till's death laid the groundwork upon which the Civil Rights movement was born.
