Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame Induction & Juanita Gray Community Service Award Ceremony

WHEN: 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Four individuals who have made major contributions to the African American community (on the municipal, state or national level) will be honored with the installation of portraits in the Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame. This year, the Hall of Fame will honor black radio pioneer James Walker aka "Dr. Daddio" and Landri Taylor, vice president of community affairs for Forest City Stapleton, Inc.

Colorado Pioneers - On a bitterly cold day in 1859, a stagecoach bound for Denver City abandoned an African American woman in the middle of nowhere. Her name was Mary Randolph, a woman of strength and determination who eventually became the first black person to build a brick house in Denver. Hear her story at 1:30, 2 and 2:30 p.m.

Black History Month Film Series - The African-Americans in Politics Film Series of Fresh City Life is free and open to the public. Hosted by Denver's Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library (B-CAARL), all showings are at the B-CAARL as part of the Library's Black History Month programming. "African - Americans in Politics: From Then to Now!" at 6:30 p.m. - The New Black Power Writer and reporter Juan Williams narrates an inspiring and intelligent documentary of what he calls the crossover politicians, politicians that manage to secure the support of white voters. Williams analyzes the suspicions and pressures that surround black politicians who are making it in the mainstream. Williams presents a historical account of black politicians from the Reconstruction period to the Civil Rights Movement and the sacrifices made to pave the way for future politicians.

Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer" featuring actress E. P. McKnight

Keynote Speaker: Olympic Gold Medalist Vonetta Flowers

Vonetta Flowers was a star sprinter and long jumper at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and originally aspired to make the U.S. Summer Olympic Team. After several failed attempts, Flowers eventually turned to bobsledding, and achieved an historic milestone at the 2002 Salt Lake Games.

Life in Dearfield - What was life like for the families that lived and farmed in Dearfield, an all-black farming community founded near Greeley in 1910? Staff from the Black American West Museum will on hand to tell this tale of hope and hardship.

Syl Morgan-Smith' s Colorado Gospel Music Academy' & Hall of Fame is hosting their 37th Annual Awards and Gospel Music Festival, and back by popular demand is Detroit's powerhouse recording artist Evangelist Evelyn Turrentine-Agee singing her great hits, "God Did it" and "It's Already Done." This "No Admission" Event is at New Hope Baptist Church, 3701 Colorado Blvd. on Sunday, February 10, 2008 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM. The New Hope Church Pastor –Elect is Rev. Dr. Ambrose Carroll, a uniquely gifted young preacher, orator, teacher and singer from San Francisco, and he might be willing to honor us in song.)

In addition to "The Annual Legends" Awards (Senator Regis Groff, Dr. Warren Washington and other unsuspecting recipients); Awards will also be given to Rev Jules Smith as Pastor of the Year, The Church of the Year - For His Glory Church (Pastors Tom and Arnitha Jones), and the Excellence in Business, Leadership and Community Service etc. awardees include (Bertram Bruton, George Brantley, Dr. Morris Clarke, Carla Ladd, Forrest City Stapleton, Combus Chapman, Dorothy Deadwiler and Rev. Marvin Dews. The outstanding youth honorees are Taylor Johnson and Janua Hancock, and Hall of Fame inductees are gifted singers C. Winston Ford, Jr. and Rashada (Ann Lewis) Sura, for whom we still mourn. These are some of the honorees but there will be the usual "Academy Award" recipients in the audience with no idea that they will receive awards.

Some of Denver's best musical talents will sing including the Drinkard Singers, New Hope's Majestic Praise Mass Choir, and Minister Michael Williams & Eternal Life. This lively Black History event is co-sponsored by the Black McDonald owners and will be video-taped. The doors open at 2:00 PM, seats go on a first-come basis, and all early arrivers receive a Free McDonalds Food coupon. The Academy looks forward to hosting local ministers, community and church leaders, singers, musicians, directors, and the general public. Street Fight at 6:30 p.m. - Examining the 21st century political arena, Street Fight is a hard-hitting, thought-provoking documentary of the 2002 Mayoral race between two New Jersey African-American politicians, Cory Booker and four-term incumbent, Mayor Sharpe James, who had heavyweight political machines Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton supporting him. Nominated to receive an Oscar for Best Documentary at the 2005, 78th Academy Awards, and directed by Marshall Curry, this film highlights Mayoral candidate, Cory Booker who ran against, Mayor Sharpe James for the city of Newark, New Jersey and discovered the Electoral Politics between candidates of the same race can turn into a battle over authenticity. Does interracial conflict over pigmentation and cultural authenticity have a bearing on elections? Are the politics in Black America changing? View this film and form your own conclusion.

The Denver Black Pages proudly announces its 5th annual Black History Month celebration, "Cookin' & Jazz - Celebrating Black Heritage in Food and Song," which will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Colorado History Museum (1300 Broadway, Denver).

Cookin' & Jazz blends sumptuous ethnic flavors, live jazz, and dancing into a one-of-a-kind Black History Month Celebration. Guests will be treated to a live tribute to jazz legends [Ella Fitzgerald (Sheryl Renee), Billie Holiday (Mary Louise Lee), and Nat "King" Cole (Alton Williams)] and delectable food from the Black Diaspora including African, Cajun, American Soul, and Caribbean cuisine. This year's theme is "Celebrating Our Roots."

A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit the Mountain Region Black Economic Summit Youth Program. MRBES is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization.

Chisholm 72 at 6:30 p.m. - A powerful message rings forth as Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman to run for president, announces her candidacy in 1972. This film documents the political atmosphere that prevailed during Chisholm's campaign, one of bigotry and disenchantment Chisholm first appeared on the political scene in 1968 when she became the first African-American woman elected to Congress representing New York.

Trailblazing Through History Benefit – A special Black History Month event to support the revitalization of Beckwourths historic Winks Lodge. Dress in western (or business) attire and get ready for a fun-filled and informative program with noted historian and columnist Tom (Dr. Colorado) Noel, and classical jazz music performed by members of the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra. Celebrating Black History Month, the College of Music at the University of Colorado is excited to present a musical tribute honoring Todd Duncan (the original Porgy in "Porgy and Bess"), and former Metropolitan Opera singers Marian Anderson, Mattiwilda Dobbs, Grace Bumbry, Shirley Verrett, George Shirley, and composer William Grant Still (the first African-American composer to have a symphony performed by a major symphony orchestra) in Boulder's Macky Auditorium Concert Hall.

George Shirley returns to Macky Auditorium for the first time since 1970 and will sing on his own behalf, while Leona Mitchell makes her Macky Auditorium debut singing "Pace, pace mio Dio" from Verdi's "La Forza Del Destino," in honor of Leontyne Price. The concert also features the University Symphony Orchestra conducted by Nicholas Carthy, as well sopranos Lori Hicks and Louise Toppin, mezzo-sopranos Patricia Miller and Marietta Simpson, and baritone Darnell Ishmel. Dr. Willie L. Hill, Jr. will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
