AURORA - Investigators say he was doused with chemicals and set on fire. Now the Aurora Animal Shelter is looking for the person responsible for what they say is a case of animal cruelty.
The cat, named Maynard, was badly burned a little more than a month ago.
"He had singed whiskers, singed fur, smelled like smoke," Dr. Nicole Bartley, a veterinarian with the Aurora Animal Shelter, explained.
Bartley has been treating Maynard for a few weeks. She's not exactly sure what happened but believes someone doused him with a chemical and set him on fire.
"We ended up with what appears to be a chemical burn as well," Bartley said.
Maynard will recover completely, mostly because he received care early on and only suffered one deep burn.
"His body is doing a lot of work. Then we're doing a lot on the bigger areas," Bartley said.
Whatever happened to him, it hasn't changed Maynard's love for people. Bartley says he's a very friendly cat and when she brought him out to show to us, he couldn't get enough petting.
Maynard had a microchip implanted in him, but his owners hadn't updated their contact information. Investigators don't believe it was the owners who abused him.
If the owners don't come forward, Bartley would like to put Maynard up for adoption.
The Aurora Animal Shelter is also looking for donations so they can pay for Maynard's surgeries.
