DENVER - Few have met him, but tens of thousands of families have felt the impact of his volunteering.
Kian Phair, 15, is a volunteer at the Food Bank of the Rockies.
Kian helps crews count, sort and load up the thousands of orders that come into the food bank every day as the food bank's shopping ambassador. Once a week, Kian comes in for a few hours, carrying a clipboard and ready to go through individual orders.
"Which food item is next, Kian?" asked Rachelle Rice, Kian's mother.
"Four Granola Bars!" Kian yelled back, before noticing something quite shocking for a food bank stocked with food: the granola bars are all out.
Kian ran over to Bruce Meadows, another volunteer at the food bank, who quickly learns about the missing order.
"Oh Bruuuuuuce..." cawed out Kian, "We need some more granola bars in space 125!"
Kian visited the Food Bank of the Rockies after volunteering for a school assignment. That first time had Kian hooked on volunteering. He dances and skips to each spot around the large warehouse.
Every time he shows up to work, Kian delivers much more than an accurate order to the clients who use the food bank. He delivers it along with a song and a two step that's nearly as iconic as Michael Jackson's Moonwalk.
It's just part of what makes Kian a 2009 9Kid Who Cares, according to Kian's volunteer manager, Olive Crawford.
"That first time he came in, he was just so positive and so excited about volunteering that he would run for the food," said Crawford, "and not just stand there, but run. He'll run for the food, run back, and be ready for the next item right away."
In addition to his two step, Kian also brings a unique tune in with him during his volunteering effort. During his interview with 9NEWS, the wireless microphone caught every note of the hums and songs he whispered behind his clipboard.
"Doo, do do do..." Kian sang. During the 9Kids Who Care luncheon, he told his Mom that he swore he never sang those songs, but he liked them either way.
When Kian isn't volunteering at the food bank, he enjoys tearing tickets at the Aurora Fox Theater for patrons with special needs and developmental disabilities.
"I volunteer because I like helping people," said Kian. "I like making a difference."
Please join us in congratulating Kian Phair, one of the 2009 9Kids Who Care.
