East High School Guidance Counselor Carl Flageolle says when he thinks of Rose Green, “The first word that comes to mind is ‘modesty."
With humility yet passion, Rose has led several volunteer efforts at her school. Most notably, Rose founded a PeaceJam chapter at East. She is currently president. PeaceJam is an international education program. Its goal is to inspire a new generation of peacemakers who will transform their local communities, themselves, and the world. “I just feel the only way to really change things is get people together,” Rose explains.
That’s exactly what she’s done with PeaceJam. In a short time, Rose has built the club into a vibrant group of more than 30 students.
Last year, Rose spearheaded a project for PeaceJam. She encouraged club members and classmates to collect clothing, school supplies, and money for organizations in four different African countries. The result? Rose and her fellow Peace Jammers donated 100 bags of clothing, school supplies, and more than $700. “The club’s diversity in terms of age, race, and economic status is a testament to Rose’s ability to work comfortably and confidently with all people,” said club sponsor, James Laurie.
Rose has also been a tutor and Colorado AIDS Walk volunteer. “Morally, I think that you should help people, especially people who are less fortunate than you,” she says. "The basis of humanity should be being kind and reaching out and connecting.”
