When many people retire, they take up golf, traveling, or maybe scrapbooking. Not Clark and Jan Hastings. When they retired six years ago, they decided to give back to the community by volunteering at the Parker Task Force.

Now it's not usual for them to work 50 hour weeks, helping to coordinate the food bank's all-volunteer staff, food drives and much, much more.

Jim Chinsholl is one of the more than 60 volunteers "I tell people for two people that retired, they probably work way more than they both did at their old careers.

"We work harder now than when we worked. We do it because we are incredibly selfish. It brings us a lot of happiness."

While you might think that Parker doesn't have many people in need–Clark says that's not the case. "The conception out here is that everyone in Douglas County is a millionaire and it's just flat out not true. The numbers are growing rapidly. Basically we're seeing middle class families that are really feeling the pinch."

"We see so many middle class families," Clark continued. "Things happen. Accidents, injuries, illness, divorce and it can change your life overnight. This is your neighbor we're helping. This isn't hard core indigent street people. We're seeing families from every subdivision in Parker."

By helping to provide 7-10 days worth of food, the task force helps families to pay off other bills and hopefully pull out of the downward cycle that can happen. "Our philosophy is that we help people help themselves. We're actually trying to give people that hand up, so they don't need to come here. Amazingly enough, most of the people that come here get what they need, get back on their feet, within 7 to 10 visits," explained Clark.

"You just keep plugging away day after day and do what you can to help. Neighbors need help and we need to help them," he continued.

"We've had some incredible success stories," Jan added. "(We've had) women who were abandoned with small children who are now running their own businesses. They have gotten school degrees and are now nursing or teaching. When they first walked in the door here they came in with nothing and hungry kids to feed."

As you can imagine, it really takes a special couple to not only dedicate their retirement to charity, but to spend much of the day everyday together. Clark and Jan actually met in Kindergarten and went through grade school and high school together, getting married after they graduated. "I still have a locket that he gave me for my 16th birthday," Jan said.

During the 35 years of their marriage Jan says they've always fed other people. "It's something we can do. People have to find what we can do. Everybody can do something."
