Trail building can be hard work, but Cindy Brockman loves to pitch in–espessially when there's a chance of getting a little grungy. "When you're volunteering up here… you get to get dirty," she said happily.

Cindy's favorite place to work is at Castle Rock Park. "It's a very peaceful place for me. Sometimes when I have a hard time, I go on top of the rock."

"This was a place that she would come and escape and try to focus on what was wrong in the world," Cindy's mom Jennie Brockman explained. "We went through a number of tough years with her just sort of screaming and not knowing what was wrong."

Cindy was eventually diagnoised as being autistic and bipolar. The park and the people who care for it became a refuge from the problems she faced everyday.

Now Cindy's goal is to make the park better so that more people can share her sanctuary. "If you improve a place that a person might want to go, more people might want to go to it," Cindy said.

"She was so excited to make this a better place and to make this a place that a lot of other people would like to come," her mom added.

"It makes me proud of how the place is improving," Cindy said.

Her favorite part is taking a look back at previous projects. "You can walk on that trail and say 'oh, I did that trail."

This spring, you can bet that Cindy will be back out at Castle Rock Park, building yet another trail. "If you find something you enjoy, like trail building, then you keep doing it."
