When many of us think of retirement, we think of things slowing down and having a lot of time off to relax. Don't tell that to Ginny Tignor. "Seniors are living longer than ever before," Tignor says, "and there's a lot more to your senior years than just sitting around!"
On any given day in the town of Broomfield, Tignor's hands and feet are always busy as she delivers close to two dozen meals for the city's Meals on Wheels program. Her supervisors say Tignor's volunteering efforts go well beyond what's expected. "She's always checking up on seniors, looking to see whether they are eating well and whether they need anything," says Diana Bimm, a coordinator for Broomfield Meals on Wheels. "She's amazing."
Amazingly enough, Ginny's Meals on Wheels efforts take up just one of her days during an average week of volunteering. The other six days are filled with exercise programs benefiting seniors.
As Tignor leads one class at Broomfield Greens retirement home, she yells out an encouraging cheer to her students: "We are going to rock and roll today," she yells. "But senior style!"
Her class focuses on exercises critical to helping seniors make the most of their golden years. Seniors start with a stretch before working on balance, flexibility and hand-eye coordination. "She's a retired Curves manager," Broomfield employee Mary Thatcher told 9NEWS. "So she realized she had the kind of expertise that would help her neighbors at the Greens."
Tignor says her inspiration comes from her faith and a love for helping other people. "I was living alone, and I decided to sell my house," Tignor says. "I was pretty lonely, so I prayed that God would put me somewhere where i could be of some importance to someone and be with people."
Broomfield Greens was the place. Tignor has been living there for two years. The exercise class and the volunteering followed shortly after her move, and she says it's been a blessing. "It's about letting other people know that there's still a quality of life. That's why I do it."
