The lights seem to never go down in Gavin Mayer’s theatre department at Pomona High School. Now in his 9th year, Mr. Mayer puts in more time than required for his students and it doesn’t go unrecognized, one student comments, “I sometimes think he sleeps here, because he’s here all the time.”
Gavin realized his calling when he was only in high school, inspired by his own 9th grade mentor he realized the importance of high school student having positive teachers to help them realize their potent in such a pivotal time in life. Gavin realizes the impact he can have on each of his students, “I do it because I think the theatre has a really good opportunity to create really good people.”
Gavin has really put Pomona on the map for theatre talent in Denver helping his students bring home awards such as State Thespian Conference Student Female and Male Champion and even the Outstanding School Award from the National Educational Theater Association in 2002. Students and the Pomona community look forward to the ongoing productions that Gavin directs year around to highlight the student’s talents and tie in cultural issues through the wonder of theatre.
Mr. Mayer’s commitment to his students and education expands well beyond the theatre department and he can be found emceeing pep rallies, designed new academic programs to keep up with the changing times, organizing a parent booster club, or even escorting student to college interviews when their parents weren’t available.
Gavin is known by students and parents alike as in inspiration to each student he encounters and they realize that his impact won’t end upon graduation, one parent comments,” many students have been so influenced by his example, they continue on to college, desiring to become teachers themselves.”
Gavin creates a sense of community at Pomona High School and helps students realize all the amazing resources available to them at their school. Through his commitment and dedication to his job, Gavin opens the doors to his students whenever they are in need, or just need someone to talk with.
“He’s not only a teacher, but a friend. He’s always someone you can rely upon when you need him,” said one student.
His students dedication are unlike the typical stereotypes for the high school age, for them school has become a place for them to grow and realize their potential for future endeavors. One student said, “I get out of bed early in the morning just so I can come here and hang out here in the morning.”
“I try to strive to focus on the kid, the student and not just what they do theatrically, but who they are as a person and the choices that they make in their lives,” said Mayer, “and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
