DENVER - The Denver Rescue Mission is in trouble. In just three weeks, they will host their annual Thanksgiving dinner for people down on their luck, but they do not have enough turkeys to do it.
The turkeys will be used to feed thousands of homeless and poor at what they call their Great Thanksgiving Banquet on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The rest will help fill 1,250 holiday food boxes for families in need.
The problem is the mission's freezer is nearly bare. They need about 6,000 frozen turkeys. Mission spokesperson Greta Walker says the shortage is coming at a time when people are in great need.
"People are really struggling," Walker said. "Lost jobs, lost homes and loss of income have placed a big demand on services."
Walker is hopeful both corporations and individuals will step up.
"Don't wait. Start thinking and acting on it now. Tell your friends and family," Walker said.
You can drop off your turkey and food box donations at the Lawrence Street Shelter located at the corner of Park Avenue and Lawrence Street.
