KUSA - As pioneers go, Richard Castro didn't belong to Colorado's era of explorers, settlers and miners. His mark as a Hispanic leader was made during more recent state history, and he left a legacy that echoes to this day... More... |

But, what would happen if you took 700 bottles of Diet Coke, 4900 Mentos and one, very willing, intern?... Steve Spangler and his team of geyserologists answered that question and taught the science behind the reaction with one amazing experiment and three days of non-stop geysers at the 2008 National Association for the Education of Young Children conference in Dallas, Texas.

How about the Mentos Geyser?!? Steve Spangler and his fearless "boy in a box" - from the 2008 National Association for the Education of Young Children conference - offer one variable that you could use for this explosive experiment. Start your project with a question... can you use the Mentos in your Diet Coke Geyser more than once? Make a hypothesis... then watch the video for instructions on how to start experimenting.

But, have you ever wondered how those antacids really work inside your stomach? This demonstration will show you exactly how Milk of Magnesia neutralizes the acids in your stomach and saves the day after Thanksgiving dinner.

Combined with hot water, liquid nitrogen creates clouds of water vapor. To make a really big cloud, Steve instead poured hot water into liquid nitrogen and the result was explosive.

But that’s just the start of the uphill climb. Product ideas need money to grow from the prototype stage to the initial production run. Did anyone mention the creativity and capital needed to get consumers interested in the product? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Fortunately, there are people like Thomas Frey, the mastermind behind the Colorado Inventor’s Showcase, the largest inventor show in the Rocky Mountain region. The annual event features inventions from 30-40 top inventors coming from Colorado as well as other states.

Just imagine the look on your friends' faces when you show them an egg and then proceed to fold it in half several times until it forms a small white ball! Wait... it gets better. Just bounce the "folded egg" between your hands and the egg reappears.

your Halloween bubble and ooze.

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. Instead of melting, dry ice
turns directly into carbon dioxide gas. Dry ice must be handled
with care as it is -110oF ( -78oC).

The Spangler clan demonstrated how to have fun on Halloween
night with dry ice and dish soap.Drop a piece of dry ice in a
bucket or graduated cylinder and watch the reaction. Add a few
squirts of dish soap and you have a bubbling, oozing, spooky
concoction for your Halloween party. Add dry ice to apple juice,
wait for the ice to disappear, and you have a chilly carbonated
drink. And for the big finally, slide a piece of cloth over a tub
of water and dry ice and make a crystal ball.

ordinary teachers don't show up at school at 5:30 AM to perform
a Halloween science show with their students! Ms. Sharp is a
chemistry teacher at St. Mary's High School in Englewood,
Colorado, and her students told us that she is certifiably mad
about teaching science. Greta invited Steve Spangler and 9News
viewers into her classroom to see her special twist on some cool
Halloween science demonstration.

certifiably Mad About Science. Steve visited chemistry and physics
teacher Don Cameron at Lakewood High School.

Mr. Cameron is described by his students as a 'really great
teacher who tells lots of jokes.' He keeps students engaged in
the classroom by making things fizz, bubble and explode.

During Steve's visit, the students demonstrated an
experiment with dry ice that shows how global warming makes the
oceans more acidic. They also used a Tesla coil to demonstrate what
happens inside a car engine with explosive results. Mr. Cameron
ended the exhausting visit with a quick nap on a bed of nails.
