DENVER - 9NEWS headed to the Denver Zoo's Birdworld for this week's Kyle's Kritters. 9NEWS Anchor Kyle Dyer introduced us to some beautiful Pink Cockatoos from Australia. We met Bonnie and Clyde, who came to the Zoo from San Diego, and their 4-month-old female chicks, which keepers have yet to name.

These birds are also called "Major Mitchell's Cockatoos - named after a Scottish Explorer or "Leadbeater's Cockatoos - named for a British naturalist. These exotic birds are native to the arid savannahs and sparse woodlands of Australia. They're known for the striking pink feathers under their wings and the brilliantly-colored crest on top of the head. Happily, Pink Cockatoos are not endangered.

In the wild, these birds are mainly ground feeders, eating seeds, berries, roots, nuts and fruits.

"The crest seems to be something that they like to raise when their excited," said Birdkeeper Jessica Meehan. "Either if they're scared or if they're excited for another reason," she added.

Keepers got a bit of a surprise when these birds made their nest in the exhibit. A box was provided in back of the display for their use.

"The nest that you see back there is actually just half of a palm log that we set up to make it look like a real nesting cavity situation," said Meehan. "So when they made their nest, they excavated all the way down into that log and built their nest in the log itself instead of nesting in the box."

Soon the two young females will get their names and eventually be sent to other zoos to help with breeding programs.
