ARVADA - A community spent Labor Day not grilling out, but helping out. They were inspired by what happened to their neighbor, Dick McNeel.
McNeel's Arvada home was severely damaged by a fire earlier this year. He spent months living out of a tiny trailer in his backyard because he didn't have homeowner's insurance to cover the damage.
"Just another mistake I made," McNeel said.
Luckily, folks like Richard Spencer and others who live along West 73rd Street, were able to do for McNeel what he couldn't do for himself.
"When you see there's a need, why, that's when you jump in and help," Spencer said.
The group has already replaced the rafters and stitched together the decking on McNeel's roof. Eventually, they'll tackle the interior.
"I don't know what I would have done if they didn't pull me out of the fire, so to speak," McNeel said.
It could be a few more months before he is able to move back into his home.
His neighbors say they'll keep up their hard work until everything is complete.
We heard about McNeel's story from a viewer. If you know of a hero, or someone who needs a hero, please tell us about it. Send an e-mail to HeroTips@9news.com.
