CASPER, Wyo. - When baseball players take the field, they do so with a piece of conventional wisdom in mind: knock off opponents, knock up attendance.

Surprisingly, in Casper, Wyo., the home team's dismal performance has the fan base anything but spooked.

In fact, fans have been pouring in, potentially in record numbers this year.

That's great news for Chris Maxwell. He's the team's community relations director.

Hardcore Colorado Rockies fans know this team as the Casper Rockies - the rookie-level affiliate for the big-league Rockies.

Two years ago, the team re-branded itself.

"At first, when people heard it they were like, ya know ... they thought it was dumb," Maxwell said.

The Casper Rockies became the Casper Ghosts as in, yes, Casper the Friendly Ghost.

"Oh, yeah, I've seen the movies!" third baseman Nolan Arenado exclaimed. "I didn't know that was going to be our team."

As part of the change, the team drew up a new logo (ironically an angry ghost), brewed up some "Boo Brew" and ordered hats that actually glow in the dark.

"On some of them, this turns into a G for Ghosts," Maxwell said while holding up one of the hats.

The only thing that didn't change was the mascot.

"The mascot is actually a platypus," Maxwell explained. "Hobart lives in the Platte River right behind the [right field] wall."

Turns out, the switch to the Ghosts was a marketing miracle.

"It's been an incredible boost of sales and our notoriety," Maxwell said. "The year we made the change, we won best new hat design from baseballamerican.com."

The Ghost hats in particular have been flying off the shelf.

"The kids love it," said one fan. "The kids love the name."

Believe it or not, so do some of the players.

"Depends on your personality," Littleton native Chad Jacobsen said. "If you're willing to work with it, then it's fun. Some people don't get the humor."
