BOULDER - From almost the moment she was born, music has been a part of Olivia Hill's life. Her father is renowned jazz musician Warren Hill and her mother, Tamara is a former record producer and singer.
Music is part of their home and a big part of 10-year-old Olivia's life.
"She really just started on her own, just singing in the house," Warren Hill said. "That voice would open and those notes would be coming out."
The Hills were determined to stay a close knit family even with the challenges of Hill's concert tours. His wife and Olivia would travel with him on tour and at the young age of 2, Olivia sang for the first time on stage before one of her father's concerts.
She brought the house down.
The applause and standing ovation was all it took for Olivia to know she wanted more.
"That was so much fun. Wow! I really wanted to do that again," Olivia said.
Her father immediately saw her potential.
"She definitely has got something here. She's got a gift," Hill said.
She continued to sing occasionally before her father's concerts and when she reached the age of 4, she started to write her own songs. To date she has written more than 70 songs and she is currently working on her first CD which she hopes to release in 2010.
Performing before an audience remains something she loves to do.
"I love doing it because it makes people happy," Olivia said.
She regularly performs at senior retirement communities in Boulder and has performed in several plays and musicals in Colorado. She recently completed a three month run starring in the musical "Annie" at the Boulder Dinner Theatre.
Whether it is before a sold out dinner theatre or in front of seniors in a community room, playing before people is what makes Olivia happy.
"The reason I have fun is when people smile or people clap and you really see that they like it and that makes me happy, because they're happy," Olivia said.
The next chapter of her music life opens Monday, Sept. 14 at the Boulder Theatre.
She stars in a feature length film, "Olivia Rox!" that debuts at 6 p.m.
The 90-minute film contains original music written and performed by Olivia.
Hill will give a short performance prior to the film. Tickets for the evening are $16 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
