DENVER - Just like some parents promise a piece of candy or a treat after a visit to the doctor, Cullen McReynolds gets something special after a chemotherapy treatment. He gets the chance to go look at the helicopter.

For about four months now, Cullen has been fighting a rare form of cancer (stage IV neuroblastoma), which requires chemotherapy, stem cell transplants and a bone marrow transplant. Cullen is just 3 years old. He loves cars, trains and planes.

A friend of Cullen's family learned about his love of planes and helicopters. Beth Ahl just happens to be a flight nurse for AirLife Denver.

Ahl and another flight nurse decided to give Cullen a special treat that may help him and his parents focus on getting better, instead of thinking about the grueling medical treatments that are still ahead.

The AirLife team decided to make Cullen a Junior Flight Team member. They gave him a flight suit and took lots of photos of him with all the nurses and pilots. After that, they offered Cullen and his parents a ride on the AirLife helicopter.

When it was over, it was hard to tell who enjoyed the ride the most, Cullen's family or the flight crew.

"I think there's nothing more rewarding or gratifying to bring some happiness to this little guy who is really inspiring to all of us," Ahl said.

Cullen's treatment is expected to last 18 months. His parents have taken a leave of absence from work to be with him during this time.

AirLife Denver is hoping to help the family with their medical expenses. To learn more about this effort, go to www.airlifedenver.com.
