COMMERCE CITY - If you ask any of the regulars at 80th Avenue Liquors, they will tell you it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Forty-six-year-old Robert is the kind of man who never complains. He is thankful for what he has, even though he doesn't have much.

He lives with his sister and her family. He calls the time with them a fortunate gift during some years of misfortune.

Two years ago, doctors diagnosed Robert with a type of cancer that started in his kidneys and spread to his bones. He has been taking chemotherapy and so far his body is responding well.

After the diagnosis, Robert lost his job washing dishes at a Denver hotel. Then he lost his apartment.

He never lost his perspective.

Almost every day since he moved into his sister's house, Robert has enjoyed a morning walk to 80th Avenue Liquors in Commerce City. He always buys two things: a soda and a lottery ticket.

"I only spend a few dollars a week but I enjoy the routine," Robert said.

He figures he has purchased a few hundred tickets over the last two years. The ticket he bought on Saturday will change his life.

"We matched every single number. They all matched! I told him you are a big winner and he couldn't believe it. He started shaking when I told him. We are all so happy for him," Manjit Thiara, the store owner, said.

"I was saying, 'Holy cow!' I was like, 'Wow, I just won $5.4 million.'" Robert said.

We aren't sharing Robert's last name to protect his privacy until he meets with some lawyers and financial advisors. 9NEWS did verify his ticket matched all the numbers.

He has not come forward to the Colorado Lottery yet.

Robert says he doesn't expect the jackpot to change his life much. He says he really needs a new car and now will look at buying one.

He plans on staying at his sister's house.

"I am going to help my four sisters out a little bit. It is struggling times with the economy and stuff and I am going to help my mom. I am going to give some to my seven nieces and nephews so they can save some for their college education," he said.

The winning ticket means that Robert has a lot more now. He says it is exciting but the money is not more valuable than what he's always had: his family and a perspective on life.

"Hopefully I'll live for many years to come with this cancer that I have," he said.

Only one person matched all six numbers in the Colorado Lottery's Lotto jackpot on Saturday.

The winning numbers in Saturday's drawing were: 2, 6, 15, 21, 33 and 39.

It has a cash value of $2.7 million.
