KUSA - Law enforcement officials are encouraging everyone
to drive responsibly this holiday season.
The Colorado State Patrol says if you are hosting a party
at your home:
When serving food, have a lot of foods available at various
locations throughout your home and consider passing appetizers
as well. Fatty, high protein foods, such as cheese, meatballs,
chicken skewers and pizza are best at helping to slow the
effects of alcohol.
Ensure that your guests eat before and while they consume
alcohol. If possible have a bartender make drinks for each
guest. If your bar is self service, have a jigger or shot
glass available for measuring alcohol. Ideally, a mixed
drink should not have more than 1 1/4 oz. of alcohol.
Provide some way for guests to keep track of how many drinks
they have consumed, such as fun stir sticks they keep. Make
sure there are fun non-alcoholic beverages called "mocktails"
available and easily accessible.
Watch for signs of intoxication that can include subtle
or dramatic changes in behavior; loud inappropriate behavior;
eyes that are glassy or red, slurred speech; lack of focus
or repeating questions; and stumbling, falling, spilling,
tripping and general loss of coordination.
Hosts can prepare for guests to drive home in several ways.
Have the phone number for cab companies ready. When guests
arrive, ask who is serving as the designated driver. Hosts
should remain alert and while saying goodbye to guests be
ready to ensure folks have a safe ride. For larger gatherings,
consider placing a sign by the door that could say, "Thank
you for celebrating with us tonight! We care about you and
want to make sure you get home safely. Please let us call
you a cab or you're welcome to stay the night."
If you drink too much to get behind the wheel, remember there
are other options:
