They are participating in The Unreasonable Institute, a six-week course in social entrepreneurship started by five University of Colorado graduates.

The institute is now in its second year and is designed to help the 27 entrepreneurs visiting from 17 countries make connections here in Colorado that can help them grow and develop socially conscious businesses back home.

"We have the resources here that align remarkably well with the needs of developing countries," Unreasonable Institute mentor Paul Jerde told 9NEWS. "I think the openness and spirit of support that is manifested in Colorado, the willingness to help entrepreneurs, is alive and well and is a very important part of The Unreasonable Institute."

The Institute is very selective. The "Unreasonable People," as the participants are referred to, must come with a business idea that addresses sustainability or social need, be able to make that idea profitable, and be capable of having the business impact more than a million people within five years.

The ventures they are working on range from portable screening technology designed to help eliminate anemia-related deaths to a water wheel that efficiently transports water in a 25-gallon drum.

The business solutions they present to one another in Boulder hoping to solve social problems at home are part of what has them being labeled "Unreasonable People" during their stay.

The creators of The Unreasonable Institute take the name from a quote by George Bernard Shaw that states," The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

They extend that logic to their participants labeling them "Unreasonable" men and women during the course of the program.

The public will have a chance to meet the "Unreasonable People" and hear their ideas during a course of free presentations put on by the institute. They will take place beginning June 23 and continue every Thursday evening through July 14 in the Atlas Building main lobby on the CU Boulder campus from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00pm.
