Erica Kitaev is a partner with the law firm BakerHostetler and she specializes in privacy issues. Kitaev says information sent by email lasts forever - even if you delete it. Private email could be reviewed in some criminal cases, civil litigation and in some workplace situations.

As it relates to online privacy in general, even if there is no crime involved, your online searches and the websites you visit can be monitored by companies that use that information to target your for advertising.

Kitaev says that people need to remember that if they don't want something to come back and haunt them later, they shouldn't put it online.
