Nothing says optimism like a droptop, so there's reason to have hope as Bentley unveils the Continental GT Speed convertible, which it will officially premiere this month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

For hedonists, Bentley throws a lot into this car. The engine is a 616-horsepower twin-turbocharged 6-litre 12-cylinder monster coupled to an eight-speed transmission. It's good for a top speed of 202 miles per hour, yet comes billed as being 15% more fuel efficient than the one in the outgoing model.

"The new GT Speed convertible will appeal to drivers who seek the sensory thrills of the world's fastest four-seat soft-top and the practicality of a year-round grand tourer," Bentley Chief Executive Wolfgang Schreiber says.

You'll know the new Continental GT convertible from its looks, distinctive grille, dark-chrome air intakes on the bumper and 21-inch alloy wheels.

As one of those kinds of cars that is supposed to come stocked with every surprise known to mankind, there will be a few surprises. Our favorite: For those who want the thrill of open-air driving in colder climates, the convertible will have a "neck warmer."
