Apple announced its App Store topped 40 billion unique downloads, with nearly 20 billion of them consumed by users in 2012 alone.
The maker of the iPhone and iPad also notched a record month in December, as device owners downloaded a whopping 2 billion apps.
"Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world," says Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, in a statement.
Apple says the App Store hosts 500 million active accounts and 775,000 apps. Among the success stories was the smash game Temple Run, which racked up more than 75 million downloads on iOS.
"We were simply looking to create a game that was fun and easy to play, but once it hit the App Store, the game took off," says Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Temple Run developer Imangi Studios, in a statement.
The game is no slouch on Google's Android operating system either, having surpassed 50 million downloads.
