DENVER - Who hasn't been tempted to break off an icicle from a home or patio? With below freezing temperatures, ice and snow are a common sight at many homes along the Front Range. Even though many enjoy playing in the snow, it can be hazardous if left untreated on your house.
Experts say ice dams and snow buildup on your roof can be extremely dangerous and costly to homeowners. The issue can be more severe in Colorado when there are several inches of snowfall because of our sunshine. Experts say in conditions like what we're experiencing now, the sun melts the snow and sub-zero temperatures set in, freezing the water on rooftops and creating ice dams. The buildup can cause cave-ins, broken gutters as well as lead to water damage in your walls and ceiling.
There is also potential for physical injuries, should icicles break off, fall and hit someone.
Ace Hardwares have reported an uptick in customers looking to solve ice damp problems across the state. 9News spoke with Ace Hardware general manager Ted Schenderlein for some inexpensive, but effective solutions.
