LONGMONT - Police believe drinking and driving may have contributed to a fatal accident that left two people dead and one injured.
"High speed and alcohol seem to be the factors, unfortunately," Longmont Commander Tim Lewis said.
The crash happened around 6 a.m. Friday near the intersection of East 17th Avenue and Ute Creek Drive in northeast Longmont. It involved two men in an SUV and a father and son in the other vehicle.
Lewis says it appears a Ford SUV was traveling at high speed in the eastbound lane of East 17th Avenue when the accident happened.
"It appears to be that the eastbound vehicle may have travelled into the westbound vehicle, struck the car so the SUV left its lane of travel and struck the dad and the son while they were going off to start their daily routine," Lewis said.
The father was taken to Longmont United Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"The boy went with his father. He was uninjured and both of the males in the Ford SUV were pronounced dead at the scene," Lewis added.
9NEWS has learned beer cans were found in the SUV.
East 17th Avenue remains closed between Whitehall Drive and Sundance Drive as Longmont Police and the Boulder County Coroner continue their investigation.
Lewis says this is the first serious accident reported on this stretch of road in recent memory.
"This part of the roadway's been reengineered in the last few years and we've not had anything like this since this reengineering occurred so this is more related most likely to speed and alcohol versus road construction," he said.
The identities of those involved in the crash were not immediately released.
