Ronald Turner - Luke Turner's grandfather
KUSA - Police say 3-year-old Luke Turner is safe after his father allegedly attacked his estranged wife and fled Saturday morning in Longmont.
"I'm just so thankful that he's safe that he's ok," Brandy Turner, Luke's mom said. "I'm glad that him [Monty] and his dad [Ronald Turner] are both in custody and can't come after me."
Monty Ray Turner, 51, is in custody. According to Longmont Police, the child was found at the Casablanca Motor Inn in Manitoba, Canada Sunday afternoon.
"We received information that he may be at a hotel
and we called that hotel and the clerk was able to verify that he was there and in fact checked in one hour before our phone call." Jeff Satur public information officer for Longmont Police said.
Satur says they notified local authorities in Canada who arrested Monty Turner when he left his hotel room with his son Luke Sunday afternoon.
"The kid's safe with family services, he's in a good mood, he's responding to everybody," Satur said. "We're trying to actively get the kid reunited with mom."
Police hope to have Luke and his mother Brandy reunited Monday, in the meantime she was able to talk to him over the phone.
"I have great news," Brandy Turner said. "I just talked to Luke a little while ago. He's in Canada in a foster home for the night. He's excited to come home and was glad to talk to me."
At 10:07 a.m. Saturday, police say Monty Ray Turner broke into his estranged wife's Longmont home on the 700 block of Eldora Place, physically assaulted her, sprayed her with pepper spray and used a stun gun on her.
"I'm sure Luke has pepper spray all over him. He's probably scared to death," Brandy Turner said.
He then took their 3-year-old son, Luke Turner. Both were seen riding away on a bicycle with a kids seat.
"He definitely had a plan," Brandy Turner said. "He had the pepper spray. He had the Taser. He had a bike with a baby seat on it. It appears that he had somebody waiting with a vehicle."
Sunday afternoon Longmont police echoed those statements.
"We did discover some holes in walls and things like that so we have additional information that he may have been hiding in the garage of the house waiting for his opportunity." Satur said.
Saturday afternoon authorities said they found the truck they were looking for, but did not find Luke Turner or his dad Monty. They assumed they had switched cars.
Monty's father, Ronald Tuner, was arrested as an accessory when he was found driving the white Chrysler police were looking for overnight. He's being held in Butler, Missouri on a $100,000 bond.
Turner has a protection order prohibiting contact with Luke's mother and his son. Police were concerned for the child's welfare and had issued an Amber Alert.
Monty is in custody in Canada awaiting extradition. He will face charges related to the kidnapping, burglary and assault. He could also face additional federal charges.
"I think I was in a false sense of security until yesterday afternoon just thinking that he was going to leave us alone, and obviously he wasn't," Brandy Turner said. "They were obviously prepared to to go great measures I wouldn't put anything past them."
Monty's father Ronald Turner was arrested Sunday morning in Missouri.
He's being held for complicity to commit second degree kidnapping.
Brandy says her father-in-law has a history of this type of behavior.
The boy was taken by his father before. In March, the Washington County Sheriff's Office located the missing father and son who had last been seen July 2, 2012 in Longmont.
