KUSA - 9NEWS traffic reporter Amelia Earhart is fulfilling a lifelong dream. She has decided to retrace the flight of her famous namesake. She will make the announcement Wednesday, surrounded by 16,000 airplanes and pilots in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at a big experimental aircraft show attended by half-a-million flying enthusiasts.

She wears a lot of hats at 9NEWS. Over the years Earhart has become a familiar face and part of the fabric of our culture here at 9NEWS. Just like the original flying female ace she is happiest when she is in the sky.

She first jumped to prominence as our traffic reporter in SKY9, forming a dynamic partnership with pilot Jimmy Negri.

Earhart demonstrated an instant knowledge of the labyrinth of streets in the metro area and viewers were quick to find her whenever there was breaking news of any significance.

She is a talented reporter with a solid working knowledge of Colorado's intricate weather, a skilled journalist a talented pilot.

"I absolutely love flying," Earhart said.

A private pilot for a couple of years now - she is about to embark on big adventure.

"One year from now I will be completing, symbolically completing, and recreating Amelia Earhart's historic flight around the world. It's a dream that I've had since I was about 18-years-old."

She'll do it in a Pilatus PC-12 NG, a versatile-reliable turbine-powered aircraft. It's far more sophisticated than that flown by her famous namesake.

"We'll be putting additional fuel tanks on board and making our way all the way around the world-in about 14 stops in about two weeks," Earhart said.

It's an ambitious undertaking for a young woman who has sought new challenges her entire life - and continues to seek new horizons.

Earhart also has a foundation that finances flight school for young women in Denver. During her flight she hopes to raise additional funds for that foundation.
