WIGGINS - Two people were killed and three were injured in a car accident involving a horse and three vehicles Sunday night near Wiggins.

According to the state patrol, a Dodge Caravan collided with a horse on Interstate 76, killing Carol Ricketts, 66, from Michigan. Her husband, Christopher Ricketts, was driving at the time of the original accident. Both were wearing seatbelts. The collision left the horse in the center of the road.

A Chevrolet Venture then collided with the horse in the middle of the road, rolling the car on its driver's side in the left lane. The Venture's driver, Walter Rothenburg, 71, from Ohio, was killed in this collision. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

An Audi A4 sedan then collided with the Venture that was rolled on its side. The sedan lost control and ran off the side of the highway through a fence. The sedan's driver, Anthony Castillo, 22, of Wray, sustained serious injuries from the crash. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Castillo's passenger, James Castillo, 66, of Scottsbluff, Neb., sustained minor injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The injured were taken to Colorado Plains Medical Center. The horse was also killed in the accident.

Ricketts was was in-town for her brother's 80th birthday party. She had just left her older brother Len Anderson's house.

Anderson said he fell apart when he heard the news.

"Carol was a phenomenal mother, gardner," Anderson said. "The one good thing is that right now she is with her Heavenly Father."

Ricketts leaves behind 12 children.

I-76 was closed for eight hours for an investigation. No charges have been filed.
