NBC - With our hectic schedules, sometimes we hit the grocery store whenever we have a few extra minutes to spare. But, when is actually the best time to go grocery shopping?
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, consumers spend an average of $191 per week on food for a family of four.
But, how fresh and how cheap your food is may actually depend on when you go shopping.
Experts say the best time to go grocery shopping is early in the morning when perishable foods are just being delivered and are at their freshest.
According to a report from Cornell University, consumers who grocery shop between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m. purchase less high calorie foods than those who shop later in the evening between the hours of 4 and 7 p.m.
If you're looking to cash in on weekly discounts and coupons, Wednesday is likely your best bet for saving money. That's usually the day that stores begin their savings programs and many will even honor coupons from the previous week.
Saturday is considered to be the worst and busiest day of the week to shop.
