BOULDER - Backed by a cadre of Colorado college chieftains, University of Colorado president Bruce Benson on Friday shot down the suggestion that his state-funded university should go private.

"CU-Boulder does not want to be privatized," he told the state's Long-Term Fiscal Stability Commission. "It's a bad idea for the state and for the students."

The commission, composed of 10 citizens and six lawmakers, is chaired by state Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, and is charged with creating a strategic plan for fiscal stability in all areas, from higher education to transportation funding.

At a July meeting of the commission, about 40 people testified about the state's fiscal model, discussing which programs could be saved and which cut. Denver lawyer Herbert Fenster argued in favor of privatizing CU.
