CENTENNIAL - Derek Rundell is an entrepreneur who wants to help students during a struggling economy. That's why he's creating InternInc.com.

"I found that it was difficult to find qualified interns," Rundell, founder and CEO, said.

He envisions a Web site combining the characteristics of Facebook and LinkedIn, giving college students a place to establish a professional online profile instead of just a social one.

"So, we're bringing students, schools, and businesses in an environment where they can all benefit from each other," Rundell said.

The Web site officially launches next Tuesday. Rundell says student profiles will be matched with companies like Facebook matches people with old classmates. He says it's about helping them find each other.

"It's more difficult to get a job. Providing a platform where students can showcase their experience would really help them to get a job easier," Rundell said.

Katie Maxwell is an intern at InternInc.com. She is also a graduate student at the University of Denver. Maxwell says it's not easy for her and her peers to find opportunities.

"It gets really frustrating," Maxwell said. "I think students are looking for something else that is more effective and can match you with where you want to go."

She says social profiles on sites like MySpace or Facebook can show students in "unprofessional" situations.

"What you do on the weekends and what your friends post on your wall, it may be inappropriate for people to see," Maxwell said. "I think it's great that you can have another profile besides your Facebook page."

The Google Corporation is not officially part of InternInc.com, but its CEO Eric Schmidt is. Rundell says Schmidt has personally invested in InternInc.com and that gives his venture legitimacy.

"I think it adds to the credibility, because somebody of that caliber, any company would be overjoyed to have him involved," Rundell said.

The service is free for students. InternInc.com is even offering a contest to people who sign up and build a profile. It's called the "Ultimate Internship" with Google in California.
After an initial trial period, companies will pay to access the information on InternInc.com.

Rundell hopes his web site becomes synonymous with Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. But, most of all, he says he wants to help students.

"Providing a service like this, it just feels right," Rundell said.
