AURORA - Police are investigating after they say a student assaulted a substitute teacher at Hinkley High School on Wednesday over an incident involving the student's cell phone.

Bob Friel, a spokesman for the Aurora Police Department, says a woman who was teaching a class asked a student to put her cell phone away during a morning class. After initially putting the phone away, the student took her phone back out at some point during the class.

That's when, police say, the teacher confiscated the phone from the girl.

After losing the phone, police say the student became "disruptive" and "confrontational" toward the substitute teacher.

While she was still inside the classroom, police say the student then assaulted the teacher and took her phone back by force. They say another student had to help the teacher, by pulling the "combative" student away from her.

Security at the school responded to the class and a resource officer who was there began interviewing witnesses.

The teacher was not seriously injured, no weapons were involved and police have not released specifics regarding the nature of the alleged assault.

The student's identity was not released because she is a juvenile.

Police referred the case to the Arapahoe County District Attorney's office for prosecution.

Paula Hans, a spokeswoman for Aurora Public Schools, offered the following statement on behalf of the district:

"We are in the process of investigating allegations concerning a student and substitute teacher. Student and staff safety is a top priority at Hinkley High School and throughout Aurora Public Schools. We are committed to maintaining a safe environment in our schools and inappropriate behavior of any type will not be tolerated. We have contacted the Aurora Police Department about the allegations and are fully cooperating with their investigation. At this point, we have no further information because this incident is under investigation."

This is the second day in a row a story has surfaced regarding alleged student misconduct at Hinkley High School, leading to a police investigation. On Tuesday, 9NEWS learned the school district is working with police as they investigate alleged "inappropriate physical behavior" between some members of the Hinkley High School junior varsity and varsity boys soccer teams.

The inappropriate behavior is alleged to have happened on the team's bus ride back from a soccer game against Arvada West High School on Sept. 25.

Two coaches from Hinkley High School face reprimand, suspension or termination following the incident and police say they're looking at possible charges of misdemeanor sex crime and misdemeanor harassment against students involved. The students could face suspension or expulsion in connection to the incident.
