PUEBLO - Two non-traditional candidates are running for homecoming queen this week at Colorado State University-Pueblo.
One is a 60-year-old woman and the other is an openly gay male student.
DeMarques Taylor says he's trying to promote diversity and acceptance of gay students.
Reaction to his campaign is mixed.
"I don't think there should be any stipulations. He could run for queen, he could run for king. It doesn't really matter. It's his prerogative," Chasity Thrasher, CSU-Pueblo student, said.
"He's a guy he shouldn't run for a girl's position. Some guy running for a queen, I just don't agree with that," Zak, another CSU-Pueblo student, said.
To become the first man crowned homecoming queen in the school's history, one of the people Taylor has to beat is 60-year-old Juanita Whitaker.
If she wins, she would be CSU-Pueblo's first senior citizen to wear the crown.
The queen will be crowned on Saturday, during halftime of the CSU-Pueblo football game.
