DENVER - When it comes to picking a school for your child, the best tool you can have is information. That's why the Colorado School Choice Web page was created.

"We wanted to pull together a tool that was more parent-friendly that would give them the data about the schools," Van Schoales, program officer for the Piton Foundation, said.

The Piton Foundation, the Walton Family Foundation, the Daniels Fund, Colorado Children's Campaign and Denver Public Libraries all worked together to create the Colorado School Choice Web site which will contain information on academic achievement, student demographics, programs offered and more. 9NEWS is also a sponsor.

This information had been available before, but Schoales says it's never been put together like this.

"We wanted to have one place where it was a bit more one-stop-shop where we could pull that information together," Schoales said.

Emily Bremer is a kindergarten teacher at The Odyssey School in Denver's Stapleton area. She says parents need all the help they can get when choosing a school especially going into their first years.

"They can really best fit their child's personality and their child's needs to a specific school and really set them for success right away," Bremer said. "I think it's crucial that parents have resources, Web sites, [and] forums."

Parents can search for schools using parameters of CSAP scores or they can use the site's interactive map to find all sorts of programs near their homes.

"To de-mystify what a charter is, what a magnet school is, an innovation school. Those are hard barriers to overcome," Marcia Fulton, executive director of The Odyssey School, said.

Even if you're not looking to change schools, it contains the latest information on every public program in the state.

"It's about helping families make good choices about a really good school for their kid," Schoales said.
