STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. NHS recently received a $200,000 grant from the National Education Association to train more teachers in STEM courses. The rest of the $400,000 came from matching grants from Xcel Energy and the Morgridge Family Foundation.

After Northglenn's swimming pool was filled in, the high school's STEM classrooms were built. Kerry Glenn, the STEM coordinator, says that section of the building only opened in 2013.

Glenn, who is the STEM coordinator at Northglenn, was once a student there. After graduation he went to college and earned degrees in aerospace engineering and applied mathematics. Glenn says interest in the STEM program is going through the roof.

"I have taught the engineering courses here for the last two years and just watching it explode," Glenn said. "Every year there is an exponential number of students who are taking it from the year before. Seeing our school going from a very traditional high school to a STEM high school has been phenomenal."
