Representative Elect Dianne Primavera (D-Broomfield) will chair the Public Health Care and Human Services Committee, which was created after the House Health Environment Committee was split into two different committees to help spread the burden of work.
The Public Health Care and Human Services Committee will handle child welfare issues the next legislative session set to begin in Jan. 9.

"One death in Colorado is one death too many," Primavera said. "So I would really like to take a comprehensive look at what the state does already, find out where the gaps are and find out if we can do something from a public policy standpoint to close those gaps."

9Wants to Know found transparency at the county level is often an obstacle when researching the death of an abused or neglected child.

While a new state law allows Colorado's Department of Human Services to reveal more information about child fatalities, counties are not required to answer to the public even though they manage their own caseworkers.

Primavera says she would like to discuss transparency issues during the 2013 legislative session.
