PARKER - More victims of an intricate rental scheme are coming forward after 9Wants to Know exposed how Greg Castle and Associated Home Inspection target Coloradans who are nearing foreclosure.
9Wants to Know has also learned that officials in Gillette, Wyoming have joined the Parker Police Department, Arapahoe County District Attorney's office and the Colorado Attorney General's office investigating Castle.
"I saw your piece on the news last night and realized that I was duped along with many others. I wasn't hurt like some but I sure feel stupid," said Vance, who claims Castle rented his Arvada home that Vance didn't realize he still owned. He asked we not use his last name.
9NEWS viewers in Milliken, Greeley and Castle Rock say they too were victims of Castle's scheme.
9Wants to Know has identified homes listed by Castle in Colorado, Kansas, Florida, Arizona, Nevada and now possibly Wyoming.
The six-month investigation conducted by 9NEWS discovered Castle goes after homeowners nearing foreclosure.
Even though homeowners still have the right to spend months in their homes before banks take back possession, homeowners say Castle leads them to believe he is working on behalf of their bank. Homeowners say Castle demands they move out.
The homes are then posted for rent on Craigslist. Renters tell 9Wants to Know they have been paying Castle, not the homeowner.
Homeowners tell 9NEWS Castle convinced them to sign an "Assignment of Surrender and Possession" document they thought was the final paperwork from their lenders.
Some homeowners gave 9Wants to Know copies of the document. It looks official and asks questions about the condition of the home. In fine print at the bottom it says Associated Home Inspection, Castle's supposed company, has the right to take possession of the house and move new people in to "house sit" the property.
Once rented, Castle collects the money; the legal homeowner doesn't get a cent.
Lawyers say the document would never hold up in court as a legal contract.
Several law enforcement agencies now believe Castle is really a man named Gordon Miller, formerly of Salt Lake City, who 9Wants to Know uncovered living in Malaysia.
In 2005, prosecutors with the Utah United States Attorney's office charged Miller with equity skimming, mail fraud and wire fraud.
Before Miller was supposed to appear for trial in 2006, he fled the country.
U.S. Marshals say they are investigating and believe eventually they will be able to track down Miller, and man who they believe is Castle.
