COMMERCE CITY- Elvira Mendez is in despair over the loss of her son, Marco Escalera, who was murdered last year around Christmas. The young Commerce City man died from gunshots fired during a fight between two groups at Parkway Liquor.

"We don't know what the fight was about. We don't at all," said Commerce City police officer, Christian Rasmussen.

The suspects are known to be 4 African Americans driving a black Ford Explorer.

After six months, the police are still trying to identify witnesses from the crime scene. The murder happened on Dec. 19, 2008 just after 11 p.m.

"We determined there are witnesses inside and outside the liquor store that night and the police department is asking that these witnesses come forward as well as anyone else who has information referencing this incident," Officer Rasmussen added.

Escalera's mother describes her son as a smart and loving young man as well as a great father to his young daughter.

"He was a very good person and I don't think he did deserve this - he didn't - nobody deserves this," Mendez said.

"Through (Escalera's) juvenile years he made some wrong decisions that got him into trouble. But he realized life was too precious, so he turned his life around," Mendez added.

Escalera changed his path in life and eventually graduated from school, participated in sports and had a good job when he died.

His mother is concerned that the incident may happen again if the person responsible is not put away.

Officer Rasmussen exclaimed that, "Anytime you have anybody out there whose capable of committing a crime like that, he needs to be off the streets."

"It would mean closure . . . and it would mean a lot," Mendez expressed.

Mendez wrote a letter about her son to share with the public. You can read the letter by clicking here.

If you know who shot Escalera call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). You could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000 and can remain anonymous.
