LONGMONT - The FBI says the bank robber known as the "Shaggy Bandit" has been caught, ending a spree of robberies that spanned four states at 17 banks.

According to the FBI, authorities pulled him over in Longmont after he was spotted inside the FirsTier Bank on Broadway in Boulder around 1:45 p.m.

A bank employee saw the man walk in, look around and then leave. The employee immediately called police, suspecting he might be the Shaggy Bandit. Investigators called the robber the Shaggy Bandit because he looks like "Shaggy" from "Scooby-Doo."

Boulder Police Officer Jason Duffy was on the Diagonal Highway and saw an older-model red Bronco, which matched the description of the vehicle spotted in previous bank robberies.

"I look at this as luck and I'll say law enforcement is a huge percent luck because it's being at the right place at the right time. And what this is - we had a very observant bank employee who did exactly as we would hope anyone in the community would do," FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright said.

Duffy alerted Longmont Police, and a Longmont officer followed the Bronco, which had stolen Colorado license plates, and then pulled it over in a Red Lobster parking lot on Ken Pratt Boulevard.

"It was kind of crazy," Red Lobster Manager Beth Buman said. "There's probably about 14 to 17 cop cars; you couldn't even get into the parking lot right here."

According to the FBI, the passenger in the Bronco matched the physical description of the Shaggy Bandit, including clothing, hat, sunglasses and a backpack.

He was identified as 29-year-old Michael A. Kincade. He is being held in the Denver County Jail on robbery charges.

The driver, 45-year-old Christopher L. Richardson, is also being held at the Denver County Jail.

The FBI believes Kincade is responsible for 17 different bank robberies in four different states, including 14 in Colorado.

The latest bank robbery was believed to be on Tuesday afternoon in Aurora.

He is also accused of robbing banks in Albuquerque, N.M. on June 30, Hutchinson, Kan. on July 14 and Flagstaff, Ari. on July 8.

"This is a lot of bank robberies in a short period of time, in my perspective. It didn't appear that there was any inclination that he was going to slow down," Wright said.
